| Hedwig Dances creates worlds of magical beauty with graceful choreography, masterly gestures, and haunting musical scores. At once lighthearted and passionate, the dances nurture a sense of the circular nature of experience, of place and customs, and the commonality of all people. |
Hedwig Dances’ History and Accomplishments
Hedwig Dances is a contemporary dance theatre ensemble celebrating 25 years
under the artistic direction of its founder, Jan Bartoszek. Hedwig Dances' bold,
interdisciplinary collaborations combine poetic choreography with sculptural
artifacts, projected images and haunting original music. The resulting dances
resonate with complexity and depth and provoke emotion, connection and
wonder. In 1992 Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Lois Weisberg
invited Hedwig Dances to become the dance company in residence at the
Chicago Cultural Center. Hedwig Dances reaches out into the community
through public performances, collaborations and dance education. The
company is named after Ms. Bartoszek's paternal grandmother.
Hedwig Dances has performed nearly 1,500 times at venues throughout
Chicago and beyond including the Ravinia Festival, the Dance Center of
Columbia College and the Athenaeum Theater, among others. Additionally,
Hedwig Dances has toured to colleges throughout the Midwest, appeared at the
Grand Opening of Millennium Park and Navy Pier, and performed at
numerous benefits. Joyce SoHo, one of New York City’s premiere performance
venues, has selected Hedwig Dances to perform in its 2006 and 2009
performance seasons. For the second year in a row, Hedwig Dances will
perform in the Dance St. Louis' "Best of the Midwest" Spring to Dance
Festival, a juried showcase of Midwestern dance companies. Hedwig Dances
has received two Ruth Page Awards and on Chicago Dance Award, as well as
numerous nominations. This year Hedwig Dances is creating its first dance
made exclusively for film.

ensemble is no exception. Her fluid, elegantly arranged modern-dance works are recognizable for
