Amma (2000)

Description

Amma is a collaboration with the renowned Indian choreographer Hema Rajagopalan and will feature a commissioned score by composer Michael Zerang.

Amma, an Indian word meaning ‘mother,’ explores the lives of immigrant mothers raising their children in America. Over the course of the past eighteen months, Jan Bartoszek and Hema Rajagopalan interviewed immigrant women about their individual experiences of acculturation – the ups, the downs, the heartaches, the fears, and joys of moving to America and raising their children in a foreign culture. The resulting evening-length performance is a combination of modern dance and Bharata Natyam (a classical dance style of India).
